Republican Representative Chris Smith has called on federal authorities to address the surge in drone sightings across New Jersey. Speaking at a news briefing on Saturday, Smith demanded transparency and action to address what he described as a “considerable danger” to public safety and national security.
“For weeks, we have asked for the truth and actions to mitigate all threats to people and property,” Smith said. “Now, we are demanding it.”
Calls for Legislation and Federal Intervention
Smith announced he is drafting legislation, prompted by requests from local sheriffs, to enable New Jersey state police to bring down drones. These sightings, some near sensitive military sites, have fueled bipartisan concerns about potential threats.
While federal agencies, including the White House, Pentagon, Department of Homeland Security, and FBI, have stated that the drones are likely manned aircraft operating lawfully, the lack of definitive identification has raised alarms. An FBI statement released Friday suggested that previous drone reports have often been cases of mistaken identity involving manned aircraft or facilities.
Despite these reassurances, Smith highlighted the advanced maneuvering of the drones, suggesting they may exhibit “major military power sophistication.” He raised concerns about the possibility of foreign involvement from countries such as Russia, China, North Korea, or Iran.
Smith also revealed he had contacted Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to request authorization to use force against these drones to uncover their origin. He criticized Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and other officials for downplaying the potential threat.
Drones Spotted Near Military and Civilian Sites
According to Smith, military personnel at New Jersey’s Earle naval weapons station have reported drones operating close to sensitive ammunition depots. “An ammunition depot of that caliber and these drones are hovering in close proximity to it,” Smith said, expressing frustration over the perceived lack of urgency in addressing the sightings.
Smith also reported allegations from the US Coast Guard that a rescue boat had been “followed in very close proximity off its stern by numerous drones.” He questioned why authorities have not been able to capture one of the drones for investigation.
The Federal Aviation Administration has since implemented no-fly zones in parts of New Jersey, though some officials are pushing for broader restrictions.
Growing Pressure on the Biden Administration
Drone sightings in New Jersey and other states have sparked outrage from politicians, including New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who urged the Biden administration to prioritize the issue. On Saturday, Hochul remarked that the situation had “gone too far.”
The mystery surrounding the drones has escalated calls for swift action to ensure public safety and national security. Whether these sightings represent lawful operations, mistaken identities, or potential foreign threats remains unresolved.
