Heavy snow and freezing rain disrupted travel across Europe on Sunday, with Germany experiencing some of the most severe conditions. Airports, roads, and public transport systems faced widespread delays and cancellations.
Flight Operations Disrupted at German Airports
Frankfurt Airport cancelled 120 of its 1,090 scheduled flights on Sunday due to snow clearance and low visibility, a Fraport spokesperson confirmed. The weather significantly impacted the airport’s capacity.
Munich Airport faced similar challenges, operating with just one functional runway while crews cleared snow from the other. On Saturday, 35 flights were cancelled as a precaution, with approximately 750 rescheduled for Sunday, according to an airport representative. Stuttgart Airport reported delays caused by lengthy de-icing operations, while Cologne received up to 10 centimetres of snow overnight, worsening travel conditions.
Icy Roads Lead to Surge in Accidents
Treacherous road conditions caused a spike in traffic accidents across Germany. Authorities noted that many incidents were due to drivers using summer tyres on icy roads. The German weather service issued black ice warnings, urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel.
Severe Weather Disrupts the UK and Ireland
In the UK, heavy snowfall rendered roads in northern England and Wales impassable. Several airports suspended flights, and sporting events were postponed. The UK’s Met Office issued eight weather warnings across the country.
In Ireland, snowfalls caused power outages affecting up to 30,000 homes and businesses. Authorities issued two weather alerts, advising residents to exercise caution when traveling.
Authorities Urge Caution Amid Ongoing Disruptions
Officials across Europe continue to warn of further disruptions as extreme winter weather persists. They urge residents to stay safe, avoid non-essential travel, and prepare for continued delays.
