Mikaela Shiffrin has decided to withdraw from the giant slalom at the 2025 Ski World Championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, opting instead to compete in the team event. Shiffrin will partner with downhill world champion Breezy Johnson for the team competition, while Lindsey Vonn, who recently returned to competition, will not be part of the lineup.
Mental Health and a Change in Plans
Shiffrin opened up on Instagram about the emotional toll of a severe crash in Killington, which required surgery and left her battling post-traumatic stress disorder. She revealed how this crash has changed her relationship with giant slalom, a discipline she once loved.
“It was devastating to confront how much fear I now feel for a discipline I once loved,” Shiffrin shared. Despite these challenges, she’s focused on the team event, where she hopes to perform at her best alongside Breezy Johnson.
Teaming Up with Breezy Johnson for Team Event
Shiffrin’s decision to join Johnson in the team event represents a fresh focus. Johnson, who won the downhill world title, invited Shiffrin to join her. Shiffrin expressed excitement about the partnership, highlighting their long-standing relationship.
“I feel honored to compete alongside Breezy,” Shiffrin said. Despite Johnson’s controversial history involving a 14-month doping ban, which was retroactively lifted in October 2023, she will be eligible to compete in Saalbach.
Vonn’s Hopes Dashed and German Team Criticism
Lindsey Vonn had previously hoped to partner with Shiffrin for the team event but was left disappointed when Shiffrin initially declined. Shiffrin later reversed her decision. Meanwhile, the German speed team, led by Romed Baumann, faced criticism after underperforming in the championships. Baumann’s head coach called the team’s performance “unacceptable.”
