Ford recalls 273,789 SUVs over brake fluid leak risk

Ford is recalling 273,789 SUVs due to a possible brake fluid leak that could affect stopping distance and increase crash risk. The recall covers certain 2022 to 2024 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator models. No crashes or injuries have been reported so far.

The problem involves the front brake lines, which might rub against the engine air cleaner outlet pipe. This rubbing can wear down the brake lines and cause leaks. Leaking brake fluid reduces braking power, making it harder to stop quickly.

The recall applies to most 2022 to 2024 Ford Expeditions and about 50,000 Lincoln Navigators made in the same years. Vehicles built before November 2024 are affected because Ford changed its assembly process after that time.

Ford found that during assembly at its Kentucky Truck Plant, some front brake lines were bent too close to engine parts. This caused them to rub against the air cleaner outlet pipe, leading to the defect. The company updated its assembly methods in November 2024 to prevent this issue.

Ford will notify dealers starting May 14 and send letters to owners between May 26 and May 30. Owners should take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer for a free inspection. If needed, dealers will replace the brake line or air cleaner outlet pipe at no cost. Customers who have already paid for related repairs may be eligible for reimbursement.

To check if a vehicle is part of the recall, owners can visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website and enter their vehicle identification number (VIN).

Ford started investigating the issue in early 2025 after noticing more brake-related warranty claims on 2022 Lincoln Navigator models. Further inspections linked the claims to brake fluid leaks caused by the assembly problem.

Owners of affected 2022 to 2024 Expeditions and Navigators are advised to get their vehicles checked as soon as possible to ensure safe braking.
