Harrowing Escapes as Fire Consumes Acres
Malibu resident Linda Michel shared her dramatic escape from the blaze. Awakened in the middle of the night by approaching flames, Michel rushed to save her horses. Tragically, her barn succumbed to the fire shortly after.
Strong winds have worsened the situation, hampering containment efforts for the rapidly spreading blaze. Over 2,800 acres have already burned, with no containment achieved. At least seven structures have been destroyed, and thousands remain under mandatory evacuation orders.
Pepperdine University Becomes a Refuge
Pepperdine University, located in the fire’s path, has provided shelter for students unable to evacuate. Approximately 300–400 students spent the night in the campus library and student center as part of a shelter-in-place order.
Nick Gerding, a student, described the scene as tense but orderly, with many students praying and awaiting updates. Classes and finals have been canceled, and students will have the option to leave campus starting Wednesday.
Fire crews remain on campus to handle spot fires, while university officials work closely with local authorities to ensure everyone’s safety.

The Franklin Fire is fueled by Santa Ana winds and dry conditions, worsening Southern California’s already critical fire risk. Gusts reaching 40 mph have propelled the fire’s spread, making it harder for emergency crews to contain the flames. However, winds are expected to ease by Wednesday, offering hope for progress in firefighting efforts.
