Formula 1 is changing the rules for this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix to make the race more exciting. Every driver must now use three different tyre types during the race. This means drivers have to make at least two pit stops. The goal is to reduce the usual slow and predictable racing with very few overtakes.
Monaco has always been a difficult track for passing other cars because it is narrow and tight. Since 2017, Formula 1 cars have become wider and heavier, making the track feel even smaller. Last year’s race was especially dull because a red flag allowed drivers to change tyres without having to pit again. This meant the starting order stayed the same until the end.
Drivers have said that it is very hard to pass others at Monaco. One driver said the race pace was slower than a lower racing series. Another driver explained that to have a chance of overtaking, a car must be four seconds faster per lap. This makes passing almost impossible, and the race becomes more about defending position.
The new rule does not guarantee more overtaking, but it adds more strategy to the race. Teams will need to plan their pit stops carefully, especially if there are safety cars or other interruptions. Some teams might try risky early pit stops to gain advantage while others may focus on keeping track position.
Max Verstappen, the current world champion, said the race could be either simple or very unpredictable depending on strategy. Starting in pole position still gives a big advantage since overtaking is so tough at Monaco.
In practice sessions, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was the fastest despite a small crash that damaged his front wing. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri recovered from his crash to finish second fastest. Verstappen was slower than usual and ended practice in 10th place.
This weekend’s race may still have few overtakes, but the new tyre rule and extra strategy could make it more interesting. Qualifying will be very important because track position is key in Monaco. Fans can expect a mix of careful driving and tactical decisions that might bring new drama to this classic race.
